Coastal Metal Signs: Stainless Steel vs Aluminium

Salt air is brutal on the wrong metal. Here is how to pick the right one for a home near the water.

Why does salt air destroy ordinary metal signs?

Corrosion is an electrochemical reaction. Metal gives up electrons, oxygen and water accept them, and the metal slowly converts to oxide. Salt — sodium chloride — supercharges that reaction in two ways.

First, salt makes moisture conduct electricity far better, so the reaction runs faster. Second, chloride ions actively attack the protective surface films that would otherwise slow corrosion down. A sign that would sit happily for years inland can show damage in a single summer near the surf.

Salt does not stay at the shoreline either. Onshore winds carry salt aerosol hundreds of metres inland — and much further across open water, headlands, and ridgelines. As a working rule, treat anything within about 1 km of the ocean as a coastal installation. If you can smell the sea, so can your sign.

Sheltered spots are often worse than exposed ones. A sign under an eave never gets rinsed by rain, so salt deposits build up month after month. Keep that in mind when you pick a mounting position.

How does 304 stainless steel handle the coast?

Stainless steel resists corrosion because of chromium. Our marine-grade 304 stainless contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel. The chromium reacts with oxygen to form an invisible, self-repairing passive layer over the surface. Scratch it and the layer regrows on its own.

That passive layer is why 304 is the industry standard for architectural and coastal signage. It keeps its brushed silver finish for decades in typical Australian coastal settings with nothing more than an occasional wash. The brushed surface also hides fingerprints and water spots far better than a mirror polish.

What is tea-staining and how do I prevent it?

Tea-staining is a brown, tea-coloured film that sometimes appears on stainless steel in coastal areas. It looks alarming the first time you see it on a “stainless” product, but here is the truth: it is surface contamination, not rust. The metal underneath is sound.

It happens when salt deposits sit undisturbed on the surface for long periods — usually in sheltered spots out of the rain. The deposits discolour the passive layer without breaking through it.

Prevention is simple:

  • Wash every 2–3 months — warm water, dish soap, soft cloth. Rinse and dry.
  • Mount where rain can reach — a sign that gets naturally rinsed rarely tea-stains.
  • Clean with the grain — wipe along the brushed direction, not across it, to keep the finish uniform.

If staining does appear, a wipe with a dedicated stainless steel cleaner or a mild citrus-based cleaner lifts it straight off. No sanding, no polishing, no drama.

Why won't aluminium rust?

Rust is iron oxide. Aluminium contains no iron, so it simply cannot rust — full stop. Instead, the instant raw aluminium meets air it grows a thin, hard oxide skin that seals the metal beneath. Damage that skin and it regrows immediately. It is the same trick stainless steel plays, played even faster.

One trade-off: aluminium cannot be engraved, so every aluminium sign is a cut design. And in extremely salty, unwashed positions it can develop a faint chalky film over many years — cosmetic only, and it washes off.

Is mild steel ever a good idea near the coast?

Honestly? No — not within about 1 km of the ocean. Mild steel is a beautiful material inland. It develops a rich rust patina that stabilises and protects the metal beneath, and it is our most affordable option. But salt air pushes corrosion past the charming surface patina stage and into aggressive, flaking, streaking rust.

Near the surf a mild steel sign can darken, streak orange runoff down your wall, and lose crisp edge detail within a couple of years. You could clear-coat it the day it arrives to hold the raw grey look — but any chip or cut edge becomes a starting point for rust, and you will be re-sealing every year or two. That is a maintenance relationship most people did not sign up for.

How do I care for a coastal sign?

Both coastal materials ask for the same simple routine. Four washes a year is the whole job.

  • Wash: warm water with a drop of dish soap, applied with a soft cloth or sponge. Every 2–3 months, and after big onshore blows.
  • Rinse: fresh water to remove salt and soap residue.
  • Dry: a quick wipe prevents water spots on brushed stainless.
