Care & Maintenance

Stainless steel signs are virtually maintenance-free. An occasional wipe with mild soapy water and a soft cloth removes dust, salt, or fingerprints and restores the brushed lustre.

In coastal areas, rinsing the sign every few months helps remove accumulated salt deposits. Avoid abrasive cleaners or steel wool, which can scratch the brushed grain.

Comparison vs Other Materials

Compared to mild steel, stainless steel costs $30 more but stays pristine forever. Mild steel develops a rust patina that some love and others do not. Stainless is the clear choice for coastal or modern aesthetics.

Compared to aluminium, stainless steel is heavier and more expensive, but the brushed finish has a richer, more premium appearance. Aluminium is matte and lightweight; stainless is reflective and substantial.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel?

Grade 304 is the industry standard for architectural and decorative signage. It contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel, giving excellent corrosion resistance in normal and coastal environments. Grade 316 adds molybdenum for even higher salt resistance, but it is overkill for most residential signs and significantly more expensive. We use 304 because it offers the best balance of performance, appearance, and value for Australian conditions.

Will it rust near the ocean?

No. Marine-grade 304 stainless steel is specifically chosen for its resistance to salt-laden coastal air. While no metal is entirely immune to extreme conditions, 304 stainless will remain rust-free for decades in typical Australian coastal settings.

Can it scratch?

Yes, like any metal, stainless steel can scratch if struck with a sharp or hard object. However, the brushed finish hides minor surface marks very well. Deep scratches can often be buffed out with a Scotch-Brite pad following the grain direction.

Does the brushed finish fade?

The brushed finish is permanent and does not fade in sunlight. Over many years the surface may develop a very subtle patina from environmental exposure, but it remains bright and silvery rather than discolouring.

How heavy is a standard stainless steel sign?

A standard 600 × 200 mm stainless steel sign weighs approximately 1.9 kg — similar to mild steel because both are 2 mm thick. The substantial weight conveys quality and helps the sign sit flat against a wall.

Can stainless steel be painted or powder coated?

Technically yes, but most customers choose stainless steel specifically for its natural brushed silver look. If you want a coloured metal sign, mild steel or aluminium with powder coating is usually more cost-effective.

Is stainless steel magnetic?

Grade 304 stainless steel is generally non-magnetic in its annealed state, though it can pick up slight magnetism during cold working such as laser cutting. This is normal and does not affect performance or appearance.

What sizes are available?

Our standard house sign size is 600 × 200 mm. Custom sizes up to 1200 × 600 mm are available on request. Pricing scales with material area — contact us for a custom quote.

How do I clean a stainless steel sign?

Occasional wiping with mild soapy water and a soft cloth is all that is needed. Avoid abrasive cleaners or steel wool, which can scratch the brushed surface. For stubborn marks, use a stainless-steel cleaner following the grain direction.

Is stainless steel worth the extra cost?

If you want a sign that stays pristine forever, lives by the ocean, or suits a modern aesthetic, stainless steel is absolutely worth the premium. For rustic or budget-conscious projects, mild steel may be the better fit.
