Everything you need to know about designing, ordering, and receiving your custom metal sign.
Straight answers to the questions we hear most — materials, sizing, pricing, shipping, returns, and looking after your sign. Everything below is current workshop policy. If anything is unclear, email us and we will confirm before you order.
Yes, if you want a sign that outlasts the alternatives. A laser-cut metal sign starts at $99 AUD including GST and lasts 10–25+ years outdoors, where timber rots, acrylic fades, and printed vinyl peels within a few seasons. You also get a one-off piece cut to your exact wording, font, and size — not an off-the-shelf design.
Mild steel signs last 10–20+ years outdoors. The surface forms a rust patina that protects the core metal — most customers choose it for exactly that look. Stainless steel is marine-grade 304 and lasts 25+ years without rusting, even on the coast. Every sign is cut from 2 mm plate, so it handles wind, rain, and hail.
Yes. Our online designer is text-based, but our design service handles custom artwork: send us your logo, vector file, sketch, or reference photos and we prepare a cut-ready mockup for your approval. The design service is a $55 add-on, charged before the job enters the queue. Approved mockups become normal cart items and go straight into production.
Mild steel does — that is the point. Left outdoors it develops a stable rust patina within weeks, which most customers want; a clear-coat option locks the look at any stage. Stainless steel (marine-grade 304) and aluminium do not rust, making them the right pick for coastal homes or anywhere you want a permanently clean finish.
Wipe it with a soft cloth and mild soapy water, then dry. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh solvents — especially on brushed stainless, where scratches show. In salt-air locations, rinse stainless and aluminium every few months. Mild steel needs nothing unless you want to halt the patina, in which case a clear coat seals it.
Yes — we ship Australia-wide: metro, regional, and remote. Checkout quotes live Australia Post rates for your address; the cart shows a $9.95 metro estimate, regional deliveries fall back to $14.95, and every order over $150 ships free. Very remote deliveries may need a custom freight quote — contact us and we will confirm before you order.
Use our online sign designer at www.metalmarvel.com.au/designer/. Type your text, choose from our curated font library, select a material and size, and watch your sign come to life in real time. Once you are happy with the preview, add it to your cart and checkout.
Yes. Our designer renders a live 2D preview as you type, then generates an exact production proof before the sign is added to cart. You can also choose a saved scene mockup on brick, timber, shopfront, reception, or garage-style surfaces.
The confirmation proof is the exact cut reference. The 3D view and saved scene mockups are realistic placement aids for judging scale, material feel, and install setting. Scene sizing is based on the millimetre dimensions selected in the designer.
We offer a curated collection of fonts designed specifically for laser cutting — from clean modern sans-serifs to decorative script and stencil styles. Each font is tested for cuttability and legibility at every size we offer.
There is no hard character limit, but readability and structural integrity depend on the size and font you choose. Very long phrases on small signs may result in fragile details. The designer will give you visual feedback if your text is approaching impractical dimensions.
Our online designer is text-based. If you have a custom logo or vector design you would like cut, use our design service — send us the artwork and we will review it for laser compatibility, prepare a cut-ready mockup, and provide a quote.
Mild steel has a raw, industrial look and will develop a natural rust patina over time when exposed to the elements. Stainless steel is marine-grade 304 with a brushed silver finish that will never rust. Both are 2mm thick and suitable for outdoor use.
For coastal environments we recommend stainless steel or aluminium. Both resist corrosion and salt-air damage far better than mild steel. Stainless steel offers a sleek, modern finish, while aluminium is ultra-lightweight and easy to mount.
Yes, mild steel will develop surface rust when exposed to moisture and air. This is part of its charm for many customers — the natural patina gives each sign a unique, weathered character. If you prefer a rust-free finish, choose stainless steel or aluminium.
All our signs are cut from 2mm thick metal sheet. This provides excellent durability and a substantial feel without being overly heavy or difficult to mount.
Our current range focuses on the natural beauty of raw metal finishes. Mild steel is supplied raw, stainless steel has a brushed finish, and aluminium has a matte silver finish. We do not currently offer powder coating as a standard service.
We offer a range of standard sizes from compact house numbers up to large statement pieces. The exact dimensions available depend on the design and font you choose. Our designer will show you the compatible size range for your text.
Pricing is based on material, overall dimensions, and complexity. The designer calculates the price in real time as you adjust the size slider. Larger signs and premium materials cost more due to increased material usage and cutting time.
Our current maximum sheet size limits signs to approximately 1200mm on the longest edge. If you need something larger, contact us and we will explore options such as multi-panel designs or custom sheet sourcing.
No. We are happy to make a single sign. Whether you need one house number or fifty business signs, every order receives the same attention to detail.
Most orders dispatch in 4-7 workshop days after proof and payment confirmation. After that, metro delivery is 5-7 business days, regional is 7-12 business days, and remote areas can take 10-20 business days.
Yes, we ship Australia-wide including rural and remote locations. Delivery times and costs vary by location. Remote deliveries may take longer and require a custom shipping quote.
Shipping is free on all orders over $150. For smaller orders, exact Australia Post rates are calculated at checkout — as a guide, metro shipping is around $9.95 and regional around $14.95.
Every order receives a tracking number via email once it has been dispatched. You can use this number to follow your package through our courier partner's website.
When your order ships we email you a personal review link. Click it, pick a star rating, and write a few honest words — it takes about a minute. The link is single-use and tied to your order, so open it from that email rather than bookmarking it. Every review is read by our crew before it appears on the site. If your link is not working, email us and we will send a fresh one.
Standard shipping is included for all orders. If you need an order urgently, contact us before placing it and we will do our best to accommodate express delivery at an additional cost.
We offer a 30-day defect guarantee. If your sign arrives with a manufacturing fault such as an incorrect cut, warping, or material flaw, we will replace it free of charge or issue a full refund.
Because each sign is made to order, we cannot accept change-of-mind returns under Australian Consumer Law for custom goods. Please double-check your preview and order details before confirming your purchase.
Our manufacturing defect guarantee covers you for 30 days from the date of delivery. This covers any faults arising from our production process, not damage caused by improper installation or environmental factors beyond the material's rated capability.
Defects include incorrect cuts, warping, material flaws, or wrong text due to our error. Natural weathering of mild steel, minor surface scratches from handling, or damage caused during installation are not considered manufacturing defects.
Most signs can be mounted using screws through the built-in mounting holes or welded standoffs. For lighter aluminium signs, high-strength outdoor adhesive or 3M VHB tape may be sufficient on smooth surfaces. Always ensure the mounting method is suitable for the weight and wind load.
Metal signs can be mounted to timber, brick, concrete, rendered walls, and colour-bond fencing. Use appropriate fasteners for the surface type — masonry anchors for brick and concrete, wood screws for timber, and structural adhesive for smooth flat surfaces.
Signs do not include mounting hardware by default because the correct fixings depend on your specific wall material. We can recommend suitable fasteners based on your intended installation surface if you contact us.
Yes. All our materials are rated for outdoor use. Mild steel will rust over time, which is expected. Stainless steel and aluminium are ideal for long-term outdoor exposure, especially in coastal climates.
