Raw, industrial beauty that develops a natural rust patina over time.
Mild steel signs from Metal Marvel start at $99 AUD including GST for the standard 600 × 200 mm size. They are cut from 2 mm Australian mild steel and develop a unique natural rust patina outdoors.
Mild steel signs require minimal maintenance. The natural rust patina is self-stabilising and protects the metal beneath. No oiling, painting, or sealing is necessary unless you want to preserve a specific colour.
If you prefer to slow or stop the patina development, apply a clear-coat automotive sealant. This is entirely optional and can be done at any time.
In wet climates the patina will develop faster and appear darker. In arid regions the colour change is more gradual and tends toward reddish-browns rather than deep blacks.
Compared to stainless steel, mild steel is $30 less expensive and offers a completely different aesthetic. Where stainless stays bright and modern forever, mild steel transforms and tells a story through its weathered surface.
Compared to aluminium, mild steel is roughly three times heavier and will rust rather than remain pristine. Aluminium is the better choice for lightweight mounting or coastal environments; mild steel wins on raw character and price.
Standard 600 × 200 mm mild steel signs are $99 AUD including GST. This covers laser cutting, surface cleaning, and Australia-wide shipping.
Custom sizing is priced proportionally based on area. As a rough guide, doubling the area adds approximately 60–70% to the price. Contact us for an exact quote on non-standard dimensions.
Mild steel signs typically last 10 to 20+ years outdoors in Australia. The rust patina that forms on the surface actually acts as a protective layer, slowing further corrosion. In dry inland climates they can last decades; in wet tropical areas the patina develops faster but the sign remains structurally sound.
No. The rust patina forms on the surface and then stabilises, creating a protective barrier. Our 2mm thick mild steel has substantial material to spare, so surface rust does not compromise the structural integrity of the sign.
Yes. You can apply a clear-coat sealant at any time to freeze the current colour and prevent further patina development. We do not apply sealant by default because most customers specifically want the natural rust aesthetic.
Yes, mild steel signs are safe to handle. The surface rust is a dry iron oxide layer and does not transfer easily. If you prefer to avoid any contact with rust, mounting the sign on a wall or fence keeps it out of reach.
We do not recommend mild steel for coastal properties within 1 km of the ocean. Salt-laden air accelerates corrosion beyond the attractive surface patina most customers want. For coastal homes, consider stainless steel or aluminium instead.
A standard 600 × 200 mm mild steel sign weighs approximately 1.9 kg. The solid weight gives it a premium, substantial feel that many customers love.
Absolutely. If you prefer a painted finish, mild steel takes powder coating and spray paint very well. Many customers order raw steel and paint it themselves to match a specific colour scheme.
Our standard house sign size is 600 × 200 mm. We can produce custom sizes up to 1200 × 600 mm. Pricing scales roughly with the area of the sign — contact us for a custom quote.
Mild steel signs can be wall-mounted with screws through pre-drilled holes, hung on hooks, or attached to posts. Because of the weight, we recommend using solid masonry anchors or timber screws rather than adhesive.
In most Australian climates you will see visible surface rust within 2–6 weeks of outdoor exposure. Wet climates accelerate the process; dry climates slow it down. The patina continues to darken and deepen for several months before stabilising.
